Correctly packing your items and investing in the right materials, together with organising and labelling will ensure your goods are kept in perfect condition throughout their time in storage.

Clean your items

Packing dirty items into your self storage unit will not only reduce their quality but could also cause an unhygienic and unpleasant environment. Make sure you give clothing, appliances and equipment a thorough clean before they enter storage – our storage units are clean and fresh to ensure a safe, hygienic environment for your items. They are also insulated to eliminate the risk of condensation.

Get your supplies ready

Ensure you have all your supplies ready before you start, packing will run more smoothly and efficiently if you have everything you need on hand. Invest in multiple size cardboard boxes, packing tape and marker pens, packing and tissue paper, furniture covers and materials such as bubble wrap and dust sheets or old blankets.

Use the right boxes

Obtaining good quality cardboard boxes will help to keep your items secure. If you’re using second-hand ones, check them over before you start packing to spot any damage, damp patches or missing flaps, as this can make your boxes weaker and cause damage to your belongings.

Pack your boxes correctly

It’s common sense, but ensuring heavier items are at the bottom of your boxes, with smaller and lighter things on top, will help to keep your belongings safe and avoid any damage, as well as allowing for better stability when stacking. Remember to make sure you can properly lift and move your boxes once they’re packed – heavy boxes you can’t move by yourself are a recipe for disaster.

Organise your items

Even if it’s simpler to place everything in together, organising your items into categories will save you time in the future when it comes to moving boxes or just finding specific items. The best way to do this is to separate your items depending on their location within your home or office, and then grouping similar items together.

Labelling is key

It’s crucial to label each box with a description of its contents , this makes it much easier to locate those needed items.  Label your boxes as you pack and make a list of where everything is located, it will save you time and reduce stress when it comes to finding what you need. Label your boxes with the room the items belong in, a brief contents, and whether there are fragile items inside. Make sure your labels are clear to read and understand, and that, when you’re stacking items, the labels are easily visible.
